Power BI Course Cost in India: Course Fees, PL-300 Exam Cost and the Real Investment
Searching for the cost of a Power BI course sounds like a simple pricing question. It usually is not.
For someone considering the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate on Coursera, there are at least four different costs to think about: the learning subscription, the time needed to complete the programme, the optional PL-300 certification exam, and the risk of paying for longer than expected if progress is slower than the advertised pace.
For a working professional, the biggest cost may not even be the amount charged to a card. It may be the 150 to 200+ hours committed to learning something that may—or may not—fit the next career move.
That makes the better question: What will the complete Power BI learning path actually cost me, and is that investment justified for my situation?
The short answer
As of October 2026, the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate on Coursera is an 8-course programme. Coursera currently gives a reference completion pace of approximately 5 months at 10 hours per week, although learners can progress faster or slower.
The programme also prepares learners for Microsoft's separate PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst certification exam and currently advertises a 50% discount on the PL-300 certification exam for eligible programme completers. The PL-300 exam itself is separate from the Coursera Professional Certificate.
Microsoft's certification is an intermediate-level credential for the Data Analyst role and covers preparing, modelling, visualising and analysing data, as well as managing and securing Power BI. The India PL-300 exam price is currently displayed at approximately ₹4,865 per attempt.
Regional pricing and taxes can change, so the amount shown during Microsoft/Pearson VUE scheduling should be treated as the final price rather than relying permanently on an article.
Check the price shown at your own Coursera checkout and budget using your realistic completion time.
Current India references show about ₹4,865 per attempt; verify the final scheduling price.
Individual hands-on learning does not automatically require an enterprise licence.
Five months × ten hours/week is a planning reference, not a guarantee.
Coursera 8-course sequence · monthly / plan pricing depends on checkout and completion speed
PL-300 · current India reference ~₹4,865 · eligible programme completers may receive a 50% voucher
Power BI Desktop · free Windows application

Those numbers still do not tell you the real investment.
1. First, separate the Professional Certificate from PL-300
This is the most important distinction. The Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate on Coursera is a learning programme. The Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential is a Microsoft certification earned by passing the PL-300 exam.
They are related, but they are not the same credential. The Coursera programme teaches Power BI skills, includes practical work and a capstone, and contains dedicated PL-300 exam preparation. Coursera says the programme can prepare learners for the certification exam.
Completing the Professional Certificate does not itself mean that you have passed PL-300. Similarly, someone who already has the necessary Power BI knowledge can prepare for and take PL-300 without completing this particular Professional Certificate. That distinction matters when calculating cost because there may be two separate investments.
Whether you need both depends on your starting skills and your objective.
- Structured learning programme
- Microsoft-issued Professional Certificate on completion
- Projects, capstone and PL-300 preparation
- Separate Microsoft certification assessment
- Earns the Power BI Data Analyst Associate credential if passed
- Exam fee and retake exposure are separate
2. How much does the Coursera programme cost?
This is where a fixed rupee figure can become misleading. Coursera uses subscription-based pricing for many programmes and also offers Coursera Plus. Its public global Coursera Plus page currently lists $59 per month or $399 annually, but Coursera explicitly states that users outside the United States can receive local-currency pricing at checkout.
Promotions and eligibility can also change. For an Indian learner, therefore, converting $59 into rupees and presenting that as “the India price” is not reliable. The better method is:Check the price shown in your own Coursera checkout immediately before enrolling.
Then record three things: Monthly price × realistic number of months + applicable taxes = expected learning-platform cost. The word realistic matters. If the programme takes you five months, a monthly subscription produces one cost.
If work, family commitments or difficult modules extend completion to nine or twelve months, the cost can be materially different.
3. How long will the Power BI Professional Certificate actually take?
Coursera currently describes the programme as an 8-course series and gives a reference pace of approximately 5 months at 10 hours per week. That implies roughly 200 hours of learning effort as a useful planning reference. It is not a guarantee.
Different learners already know different amounts of Excel, data analysis, Power Query, data modelling and reporting. Some will progress much faster. Others will need considerably longer.
Using approximately 200 hours only as a planning assumption:These are simple planning estimates, not Coursera completion promises. They reveal something important, however. A learner who says: "I can probably manage four hours a week" is making a very different financial and time commitment from someone who can consistently give the programme ten hours every week.
That does not mean four hours per week is insufficient. It means the learner should plan for a longer timeline and check what that longer timeline could mean for subscription or renewal costs.
4. What does PL-300 cost in India?
The PL-300 exam is the assessment associated with the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification. At the time of this review, the India price is approximately ₹4,865 per exam attempt. Because Microsoft uses country/region-based pricing, candidates should verify the amount displayed when scheduling rather than assuming the price will remain unchanged.
There is another important factor. Coursera currently states that learners completing the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate can earn 50% off the PL-300 certification exam. If a 50% voucher applies to a ₹4,865 exam price, the arithmetic would reduce that component to approximately ₹2,433 before any applicable taxes or checkout adjustments.
But do not budget from that arithmetic alone. Check the current voucher eligibility, validity period, redemption conditions and final exam checkout price before making the purchase decision.
5. What if you do not pass PL-300 the first time?
Exam-attempt risk belongs in the budget. Microsoft's current retake policy says that after an unsuccessful first attempt, a candidate must wait 24 hours before retaking the exam. Subsequent retakes require a 14-day waiting period, and an exam can generally be attempted no more than five times within a 12-month period from the first attempt.
Microsoft also states that candidates must pay for retakes where applicable. That means an exam budget should not automatically assume one exam fee equals a guaranteed certification. A more cautious learner may want to ask:How close am I to exam readiness?
Have I actually built Power BI reports myself? Can I work with Power Query and data models rather than only follow tutorials? Am I comfortable with DAX?
Can I explain why a model or visualisation is designed a particular way? Have I used Microsoft's practice assessment and current exam study guide? The purpose is not to make the exam sound risky.
It is to avoid treating an exam fee as though passing is automatic.
6. Do you need to pay for Power BI software while learning?
Not necessarily. Microsoft Power BI Desktop is available as a free Windows application. It allows learners to connect to data, transform it, build models and create interactive reports.
That means much of the individual hands-on learning can be done without purchasing a Power BI Pro licence. Paid licensing becomes more relevant when collaboration, organisational sharing and particular Power BI service capabilities are required. Microsoft's documentation distinguishes the free individual experience from paid sharing and collaboration capabilities.
For someone learning independently, therefore, do not automatically add an enterprise Power BI licence to the study budget.
7. The hidden cost: your time
This is the cost most course comparisons ignore. Suppose the programme requires approximately 200 hours for you. Those hours have an opportunity cost.
A working professional might spend them:completing the Power BI programme;improving advanced Excel;learning SQL;building a portfolio;preparing for an internal role change;applying for jobs;developing deeper domain expertise; orsimply doing nothing career-related and preserving personal time. The question is therefore not "Is 200 hours expensive? "The useful question is: "Is Power BI the best use of these 200 hours for the career direction I am pursuing?
"For one person, the answer may clearly be yes. For another, SQL may be the bigger gap.
A more realistic calculation is:Real investment = course/subscription cost + certification cost + possible retake cost + additional tools/resources + time commitment + opportunity costNot every component has to be converted into rupees. The point is to identify it before paying. Consider two hypothetical learners:Learner A: Works in banking operations, uses Excel regularly, has never built a Power BI model and wants to move toward MIS/analytics work.
The programme may provide substantial new capability, making the time investment worthwhile. Learner B: Already works with Power BI daily, knows Power Query and DAX, builds data models and primarily wants the PL-300 credential. For this learner, completing an entire beginner-oriented Professional Certificate may not be the most efficient route.
The programme is the same. The investment case is different.
- Banking operations background
- Regular Excel user
- No Power BI model-building experience
- Wants MIS / analytics exposure
- Already uses Power BI daily
- Knows Power Query, DAX and data models
- Mainly wants the PL-300 credential
- May duplicate too much beginner content
9. What does the programme actually cover?
Cost should be evaluated against what you are buying. Coursera's current programme description includes work involving Power BI, Excel, data preparation, modelling, visualisation, dashboards, analytics, deployment, security, a capstone project, and dedicated PL-300 exam preparation. The final PL-300 preparation course reviews the main areas assessed by Microsoft's exam: preparing data, modelling data, visualising and analysing data, and deploying or maintaining Power BI assets.
That makes the programme broader than simply learning how to create attractive charts. But coverage is only one side of course value. The other is whether those capabilities are relevant to the work you want to do.
10. Will the certificate get you a Power BI job?
No responsible course analysis should promise that. A certificate can provide structured learning and evidence that a programme was completed. A certification can validate knowledge against a defined vendor assessment.
Neither automatically produces a job offer. Microsoft itself describes the PL-300 certification around the work of a Power BI data analyst: delivering actionable insights, working with business stakeholders, preparing and modelling data, and creating useful analysis and visualisations. That description is revealing.
Employability involves more than knowing where Power BI buttons are. It requires business understanding, data skills, analytical reasoning, communication, and evidence of applied work.
11. Remember the renewal requirement
Passing PL-300 is not necessarily the end of the certification lifecycle. Microsoft's role-based certifications have a 12-month renewal frequency. Microsoft currently allows eligible certifications to be renewed at no charge through an online, unproctored Microsoft Learn renewal assessment during the six-month renewal window before expiry.
So the financial renewal cost can currently be zero if renewal is completed on time. But there is still a maintenance commitment: keeping knowledge current and completing the renewal process before expiry.
12. When does this investment make more sense?
The Power BI learning path becomes easier to justify when several conditions line up:Your target work genuinely uses BI or analytics. You have a clear capability gap that the programme addresses. Power BI appears in the roles, internal opportunities or work problems you are targeting.
You can realistically sustain the weekly learning commitment. The financial cost fits your budget even if completion takes longer than the ideal timeline. You intend to practise and build evidence of capability rather than merely collect the certificate.
The case becomes weaker when the purchase is mainly driven by statements such as "Data analytics is growing" or "Certification should improve my salary. " Those statements are too general to justify a specific person's investment.
13. Five checks before paying
Before enrolling, write down answers to these five questions:What career outcome am I actually trying to achieve? (Name the specific work change, not just "learn Power BI"). Which of the programme's capabilities are genuinely new for me?
(Separate new learning from material you already know). How many hours can I consistently study each week? (Use your actual schedule, not your best week).
What will the programme cost if I finish at that pace? (Check subscription prices and calculate slower scenarios). What will I do with the capability after completion?
(A credential without a plausible application path is a weaker investment).
Name the work change, not just “learn Power BI”.
Separate new learning from content you already know.
Use your actual weekly schedule, not your best week.
Calculate a slower completion scenario too.
Know what you will do with the capability afterwards.
Conclusion: Is the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate worth the cost?
There is no universal answer. The programme has a clear structure, practical Power BI coverage and a direct connection to PL-300 preparation. Coursera currently positions it as an 8-course beginner-level Professional Certificate with a reference pace of around five months at ten hours per week.
The PL-300 certification provides a separate Microsoft credential and currently carries an India exam cost of approximately ₹4,865 before considering any applicable programme discount, tax or retake. Those facts tell you what the investment contains. They cannot tell you whether it is a good investment for you.
That depends on your current role, relevant experience, existing capability, target career direction, budget and realistic weekly study time. And that is the part worth checking before paying.
Check the programme against your situation
